Message from the Head of the Department, Department of Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics

I have had a passion in food related area since I was a child, my notion that I can actually study food in school was in class six in primary school where I was introduced to Home science and instantly I knew what I wanted to do in future. It was not clear at the beginning but as time went by I ended up taking Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics as a career. This was majorly influenced by my professional lecturers whom I met in undergraduate. With this understanding, I appreciate the role a teacher or instructor plays in the career choice of a young person. I made a decision when I ended up being a trainer to always be the best for my student, this has been my guiding principle as I lead this department. I have always striven to have a faculty that puts the student first in matters academic, a faculty that is professional in its undertaking and dealings. A follow up on our graduates proves this fact that we have always had them in mind, and that they are the most important people.

This major is a gateway to a wide choice of career opportunities in future. It includes a certificate, diploma and degree. A student qualifies to join at any level after satisfying the entry requirements which include a minimum grade of C+ in KCSE for BSc, with C plain in English/Kiswahili, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics/ Physics/Geography. Diploma minimum grade of C- with D+ in English/Kiswahili, Chemistry, Biology and D plain in Mathematics/ Physics/Agriculture/General Science and Certificate minimum grade of D+ with D plain in English/Kiswahili, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics/ Physics/Agriculture/General Science. In addition to the above one can undertake professional upgrading in four main subject areas i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English.   I hereby welcome all prospective students to the department of Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics.
