June 22nd, 2023 (Baraton, Kenya) – In a significant move towards advancing eLearning initiatives, the University of Eastern Africa was honored to host a benchmarking visit by the esteemed eLearning team from Rift Valley Technical & Training Institute (RVTTI). The visit, which took place June 21, 2023, focused on exploring and evaluating various aspects of eLearning with the aim of fostering knowledge exchange and collaborative growth in the field of online education.
The event commenced with a warm and professional courtesy call at the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academics, Dr. Paul Wahonya, setting the tone for collaboration and shared objectives. Subsequently, the delegation proceeded to the conference room of the Community Centre, where an engaging meeting took place. The session began with an uplifting devotion led by Dr. Rebecca Omwanga, followed by an introduction from Dr. Paul Wahonya. Dr. Meshack Misoi then took the floor, providing valuable insights into the successful administration of e-learning at UEAB. Dr. Misoi, expressed his excitement about the visit, highlighting the potential for mutual learning and progress in the realm of online education.
The benchmarking visit placed particular emphasis on several critical areas related to eLearning. The first area of focus was the organization of the eLearning Center Department. Experts examined the structure, roles, and responsibilities of the department, aiming to identify effective strategies for organizing and managing eLearning initiatives within the institution.
Another significant aspect evaluated was the general layout of the virtual learning center. The team assessed the design and user interface of the virtual learning environment, seeking insights to optimize user experience and facilitate seamless navigation for students and faculty.
The eLearning taskforce, processes, and procedures were also closely examined during the visit. By studying the taskforce responsible for eLearning implementation, the visit aimed to identify efficient processes and procedures for developing, delivering, and maintaining online courses.
The comprehensive presentations delivered throughout the visit were informative and thought-provoking. Mr. Timothy Odhiambo, the Acting ITS Manager, delivered a detailed presentation on e-learning infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of robust technological support. Mr. Felix Chepsiror followed with an enlightening presentation on LMS and Other E-Learning Technologies, including Online Examinations, showcasing the integration of cutting-edge tools in the learning process. Professor Moses Kibirango, the Director for Quality Assurance, shared insights on E-Learning Policies and Procedures, underscoring the significance of quality standards in e-learning initiatives.
One of the highlights of the visit was Mr. Alexander Mulinge’s presentation on E-Learning and the Library, which shed light on the crucial role of digital resources in facilitating effective learning experiences. Dr. Misoi skillfully facilitated two interactive question-and-answer sessions, allowing all participants to engage and share their thoughts. To further enrich the experience, Dr. Misoi led an enlightening E-Learning Facilities Tour, providing the delegation with a firsthand glimpse into the state-of-the-art infrastructure and resources available at UEAB.
Lastly, strategies for conducting secure online examinations were explored. The benchmarking visit addressed the crucial challenge of ensuring the integrity and fairness of assessments in an online setting. Methods such as remote proctoring were discussed to facilitate safe and reliable examination processes.
The benchmarking visit commenced promptly at 9:00 am and provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions, knowledge sharing, and collaborative brainstorming sessions between RVTTI and the University of Eastern Africa. Prof. Moses Kibirango, the Director for Quality Assurance, UEAB, expressed his gratitude for the knowledge and insights gained from the benchmarking visit, emphasizing the commitment of both institutions to furthering the advancement of eLearning.
