The University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB), has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing responsible, effective, and service-oriented student leadership through an orientation training programme held on November 2, 2026. The programme brought together student leaders and senior University administrators for an engaging session focused on leadership development, effective communication, teamwork, and institutional responsibility.
The training was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Msafiri M. Jackson; Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Planning, Prof. Hellen Ndiku; and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics and Student Affairs, Prof. Kenneth Otieno. All student deans were also present, alongside guest facilitator Mr. Mule.
A central theme throughout the orientation was the importance of effective communication in building successful and accountable leadership. Participants were encouraged to develop strong interpersonal skills, practise active listening, communicate with clarity, and cultivate an environment of mutual respect and collaboration.
In one of the key messages of the training, Prof. Kenneth Otieno, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics and Student Affairs, challenged student leaders to embrace a leadership philosophy grounded in empowerment and delegation.
“A good leader does not do everything but empowers other people to do it.”
The message underscored an important principle of effective leadership: leadership is not measured by how much an individual does alone, but by the ability to inspire, empower, and mobilise others towards achieving shared objectives.
The orientation also incorporated team-building activities, providing student leaders with an opportunity to strengthen relationships, build trust, and enhance their capacity to work collaboratively.
Through these interactive activities, participants were encouraged to appreciate the value of collective responsibility and recognise that effective student leadership requires unity, cooperation, and a shared commitment to serving the University community.
The training provided an important platform for engagement between University management and student leadership, reinforcing the University’s expectations regarding responsible representation, effective communication, accountability, and service.
As the student leaders begin their term of service, the orientation serves as a foundation for a more collaborative and purposeful leadership experience. The emphasis on empowerment, communication, and teamwork reflects the University’s commitment to developing leaders who not only represent their fellow students but also contribute positively to the University’s vision and mission.
At the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, leadership is more than holding a position; it is an opportunity to serve, inspire, empower others, and make a meaningful difference.
