PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of Family and Consumer Sciences is to educate students in a profession that is helping rural and urban families maintain their human dignity. Living productive and worthwhile lives, the students will continue to effectively develop their skills in the Family and Consumer Sciences amid social, economical and technological changes. In addition to the general philosophy of Family and Consumer Sciences, the department purports to integrate faith and learning through teaching students Christian ways of eating, dressing and family living.
MISSION
The mission of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department is to fulfill the mission of the University by educating and providing competent personnel from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in areas that pertain to healthful living. With the increased lifestyle diseases, perverted fashion and designs, and broken families, there is recognition of the importance of nutritionist and dieticians for the optimal well-being of people; highly qualified personnel to manage food industries; fashion and textile designers; and family educators for the purpose of enhancing human dignity.
VISION To graduate the most knowledgeable students in the country who will be the promoters of healthful lifestyle.
OBJECTIVES
The department of Family and Consumer Sciences aims to achieve the following:
1. To prepare competent Christian personnel in the following areas: Nutrition and Dietetics, Hotel Management, Fashion and Textile Design and Child and Family.
2. To develop students who will become promoters of healthful eating habits as well as living and dressing decently.
3. To prepare students with effective professional skills in Nutrition, Design, Hospitality and Child and Family, and also with the capacity of carrying out research in their areas of specialization.
4. To impart the necessary entrepreneurial skills which will enable students eradicate poverty by being self reliant in the world of economic crisis.
5. To impart professional skills which will enable students meet the needs of the community through field extension and rural development.
6. To prepare students for post graduate studies in Nutrition and Dietetics, Hotel Management, Fashion and Textile Design, and Child and Family related areas.
Programs

1. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NUTRITION AND DIETETICS.
OBJECTIVES
a) Assist the students in the development of a philosophy of health that encompasses the whole person – physical, mental and spiritual;
b) Provide the students with the theoretical foundation and practical skills needed to make them competitive practitioners of nutrition and dietetics in the job market;
c) Produce graduates that are confident in their capabilities and thus can function as self- employed counselors and consultants in matters of nutrition and dietetics;
d) Develop in students the ability to think objectively, and to collect, analyze and draw valid conclusions from scientific data;
e) Provide knowledge on current issues pertaining to nutrition and dietetics;
f) Develop in the students the vision and moral values necessary to improve the nutritional health of Kenya and Africa in a compassionate and caring way and particularly to meet the needs of growing children and people affected by lifestyle diseases.
2. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HOTEL MANAGEMENT
OBJECTIVES
a) To equip the students with the necessary skills to be able to successfully manage hotels.
b) To enable students to develop appropriate research methods, skills and aptitude for postgraduate studies and professional growth.
c) To impart the necessary entrepreneurial skills to the students so that they can be self employed upon graduation.
d) To provide students with adequate technical and practical skills through well-designed laboratory practical that will make them competent enough to run reputable restaurants/hotels.
3. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN FASHION AND TEXTILE DESIGN
OBJECTIVES
This program is designed to achieve the following objectives:
a) To provide students with necessary skills in Fashion and Textile Design that are applicable in our modern world of people who are striving to be fashionable.
b) To empower students to eradicate poverty by being self reliant in the world of economic crisis.
c) To enable students be absorbed in job markets in textile industries, teaching jobs in related areas, designers etc.
d) To promote morals accompanied by appropriate dressing on various occasions.
e) To prepare students for post graduate studies in Fashion and Textile design.
4. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CHILD AND FAMILY
OBJECTIVES
a) To prepare competent Christian Family Life Managers.
b) To promote and serve the needs of the community through field extension and rural development.
c) To impact professional skills to student to enable them to be effective in educating the public, the client and community about family issues.
d) To make students competent in carrying out research related to family issues.
e) To prepare student for post graduate studies in family and consumer science related areas.

Careers

The degrees obtained from the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences produce nutritionist and dietitians, managers in food industries, fashion and textile designers, social workers and counselors in family related issues. The degrees enable students to work in hospitals and other health care facilities, educational institutions, business and industries, government and communities, etc. Apart from employments, students are also prepared to be self employed in their related areas.

Direct Entry
In addition to meeting the minimum university requirements of an overall grade of C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent, students seeking admission into Nutrition and Dietetics, Hotel Management, Fashion and Textile Design, Child and Family and Associate degrees shall meet the following requirements: 1. The candidate should also have a KCSE grade (or its equivalent) of C+ or better in Chemistry and Biology, and in any two of the following subjects: home science, business, agriculture, mathematics, and computer science. 2. For candidates pursuing a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, there will be no entrance into clinical experience if the overall GPA is below 2.33. 3. Someone who has finished a diploma in related areas from a reputable institution can be admitted into the program. Inter-departmental Transfer If a student wishes to transfer to the Family and Consumer Sciences Department, he/she must pass MATH 101 Precalculus, and PHYS 105 or 106 Concepts of Physical Science, with no less than a C-.
REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION
1. For Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics
a) A student must complete a minimum of 144 credits with a GPA of at least 2.00
b) A GPA of 2.33 for the major area with no grade below C+.
2. For Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management
a) A student must complete a minimum of 143 credits with a GPA of at least 2.00.
b) A GPA of 2.25 for the major area with no grade below C.
3. For Bachelor of Science in Fashion and Textile Design
a) A student must complete a minimum of 138 credits with a GPA of at least 2.00.
b) A GPA of 2.25 for the major area with no grade below C.
4. For Bachelor of Science in Child and Family
a) A student must complete a minimum of 144 with a GPA of at least 2.00.
b) A GPA of 2.25 for the major area with no grade below C.
5. Associate Degree.
a) Nutrition and Dietetics: A student must complete a minimum of 78 credits with a GPA of at least 2.33 and with no grade below C+.
b) Hotel Management: A student must complete a minimum of 76 credits with a GPA of at least 2.25 and with no grade below C.
c) Fashion and Textile Design: A student must complete a minimum of 73 credits with a GPA of at least 2.25 and with no grade below C.
d) Child and Family: A student must complete a minimum of 74 credits with a GPA of at least 2.25 and with no grade below C.
6. Minor in Family and Consumer Sciences:
a) Nutrition and Dietetics Minor: A student must complete 45 credits with a GPA of at least 2.33 and with no grade below B-.
b) Hotel Management Minor: A student must complete 31 credits with a GPA of at least 2.25 and with no grade below C.
c) Fashion and Textile Minor: A student must complete 28 credits with a GPA of at least 2.25 and with no grade below C.
d) Child and Family Minor: A student must complete 27 credits with a GPA of at least 2.25 and with no grade below C.
