Philosophy
Health is the most important human need. As public health professionals, we encourage practices that promote spiritual, physical and mental wholeness through correcting, controlling, and caring for various aspects that affect the health of the community.
Mission
The department endeavors to fulfill health needs through training students on health issues, with emphases on disease prevention, promotion of environmental awareness, physical fitness, and research. In this process, it will be guided by Biblical principles and the philosophy of Christian education.
Vision
The vision of the Department of Public Health is to lead in the training of health-care professionals who will serve in positions where they may effectively and efficiently witness for God through sound stewardship and healthful living.
Objectives
The programme in Public Health is designed to:
1. Equip the student with a comprehensive understanding of public health, including public health problems and health-care systems.
2. Train students as public health professionals for local and international careers.
3. Prepare health professionals who are specialists on surveillance and control of communicable diseases.
4. Equip students with skills in scientific research and writing that will enable them to work together with a biomedical team.
5. Prepare individuals who understand the importance of the environment on health.
6. Train public health professionals in the integration of faith and public health practice.
7. Provide students with a foundation for continuation into advanced degrees.

Please Note
- Upgrading Program Emphasis is placed on the importance of environmental health, which is the only option that is available at present. Students are trained to recognize health conditions at all levels - from the individual to the society and communities. They are prepared to resolve issues in environmental health, and are competent on methods of surveillance and control of communicable diseases. This programme may be completed in four academic years.

Direct Entry
A student who wishes to be admitted into the public health programmes under direct entry must have:
1. Satisfied the minimum KCSE entry requirements of the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.
2. Attained a grade of C+ or above at the KCSE level, or its equivalent as evaluated by authorized bodies, in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, English or Kiswahili.
Entry Requirements for Diploma Holders
Diploma applicants must meet the following requirements.
1. A minimum mean grade of C (plain) or Division III at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KSCE) OR its equivalent.
2. A diploma in Public Health or other health related disciplines such as Nursing, Clinical Medicine and Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution.
3. Provide academic transcript, an updated curriculum vitae (CV) and course syllabi from the diploma program in which the qualification was obtained to facilitate evaluation and credit transfer.
CREDIT TRANSFER
A student hoping to be exempted from doing some courses offered at the university or receive credit transfer is expected to petition by filling the credit transfer application form available in the registrar's office. The application must be accompanied by a CV, transcript showing all courses, grades from previous training, and course syllabi/outlines.
Please Note:
- A minimum of 18 and a maximum of 40 credits may be transferred and exempted. Additional credit based on additional training after the basic diploma may be applied on individual basis. The credit transfer/exemption will consider differential training like in Public Health, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Services, Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy and notified in writing by the registrar. [T]he student must have scored a minimum grade of C (plain) in the equivalent course he/she is seeking exemption/credit transfer. The applicant must also have at least two years of relevant work experience in public health or health related areas.
