You Need This Confidence! 1

You Need This Confidence!

Hebrews 10:35
Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

The writer of the book of Hebrews is recommending to the readers that they should not dispose of the confidence they had. Probably after a long time of maintaining the confidence they started giving up because it seemed the confidence yielded nothing. Confidence has to do with boldness and courage in the face of circumstances that challenge us. Confidence is maintaining your position. Confidence is refusing to give up. Confidence is walking on in spite of threats. Confidence is refusing to fear when there is enough reason to fear. Confidence is defying threatening reality and maintaining your ground. Confidence is being sure that your methods will work, your strategy won’t fail, in the face of new and growing challenges. Confidence is being sure of your success when everyone else seems to doubt. Confidence works well and easy for everyone if it is short term. But when confidence has to be a long term strategy many start to give up on what they were confident in and they yield to the pressure around them. That is why the Hebrews writer urges the readers that, do not throw away your confidence. You need this confidence!

The targeted audience of the book of Hebrews had faith. They were confident that their faith in God is a sure ground to stand on. They demonstrated their confidence in having faith in God as the verses below indicated.

Hebrews 10:32
But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings,

Hebrews 10:33
sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.

Hebrews 10:34
For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.

Hebrews 10:35
Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

The readers are reminded that when they were just converted in to their new faith in Jesus, they had great confidence in God. They went through serious suffering but accepted the suffering instead of giving up their faith in God. Their confidence in the face of suffering was great! They were even publicly embarrassed, lost reputation and were persecuted because of their faith, but they remained confident that trusting God was a better way of life. When they themselves did not suffer, they publicly supported those who were suffering because of their faith in Jesus. Even when they lost property that took years to acquire and immediately became poor because of their faith in Jesus, they remained confident that they had better possessions in the coming Kingdom of God. Confidence in the face of suffering, embarrassment, and huge losses. The readers are reminded not to throw away this confidence. You need this confidence!

Why do they need this confidence? First is because it will be rewarded in a great way. The confidence is not a short term strategy. If you cannot be confident for the long haul, you are not ready to be a christian. Christian confidence requires a readiness to wait on God even while sleeping in a grave. Confidence in God doesn’t mean that the script will be you suffer briefly then you have a long time of happiness here on earth. The confidence in Christ is long term and ready to endure to death.

Revelation 2:10
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Be faithful unto death. Confidence must be maintained even if it means you will be vindicated after death. Many have confidence but for short term purposes. When they are challenged to remain faithful permanently, their confidence fades away and they get attracted back to the world. Hence the reminder, do not throw away your confidence, it will ultimately be rewarded. You need this confidence!

Be confident in prayer even when you don’t recover after prayers. Be confident in God when no appropriate marriage partner comes your way. You are safer dying single than contrary to God’s will by marrying a wrong person. Be confident that God will open away for you even if after many years no way seems to open. Be confident when no prayers are answered. Be confident when the happiness you pray for in marriage becomes permanently elusive. Be confident when your ministry doesn’t seem recognised or appreciated. Be confident in the face of a seemingly silent non-responsive God. This confidence will be richly rewarded. Do not throw away your confidence, it has a great reward. You need this confidence!

Hebrews 10:35
Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

Hebrews 10:36
For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.

Hebrews 10:37
For,
“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;

Hebrews 10:38
but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”

Hebrews 10:39
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

Other reasons why you need this confidence is that God may delay but He will keep His promise. Be confident even in delay that God will keep His promise. You will be grateful that you did not throw away your confidence. What delay are you facing? Has God delayed the healing? Has God delayed to vindicate you? Has God delayed to give you a financial break through? Has God delayed to grant happiness? Has God delayed to lift you from loneliness or poverty? Be confident even in delay, you won’t regret. Do not throw away your confidence, it has a great reward. You need this confidence!

Yet in a little while. Suffering makes a short time seem very long. Be sure that God will not allow us to suffer for too long. In yet a little while, He will come to set us free and vindicate us, and answer all our questions and satisfy all our needs. It may seem long because suffering stretches time, but in the name of Jesus, it won’t be long! Be confident in God even when it seems long, for it is not long and God won’t allow it to be long, it only seems to be long. Be confident particularly when it seems to take too long. When it seems long, do not throw away your confidence, it has a great reward. You need this confidence, when it seems it has taken too long to get any answer.

To maintain this confidence requires faith. That is why he writes that, the righteous shall live by faith. Faith is maintaining confidence when giving up seems sensible and logical. Remain faithful to God and have faith in God. Do not throw away your confidence, it has a great reward. You need this confidence.

To throw away confidence is to lose faith, is to shrink back, it is to back slide. God says He has no pleasure, no love, no favour, no blessings, for those who back slide, those who shrink back, those who lose their faith, those who throw away their confidence. Do not throw away your confidence, because if you do, you become a target of God’s wrath. You live a life of no blessings and favour from God. For the sake of a better life now and eternal life to come, do not throw away your confidence in the face of all that comes your way today. You need this confidence!

May God grant us this confidence amidst the realities of our pain and struggles everyday. May this confidence be ours and its attendant blessings. May this confidence be richly rewarded in a little while, in Jesus name, Amen!(c)rkesis@gmail.com (do not delete any part of this post, including this.
