Which Wisdom?

Which Wisdom?

James 3:15
This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

James 3:17
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

Wisdom is the quality of being sensible, knowledgeable with good judgement. This quality enables one to live a good life as they evade pitfalls that cause many to fail and live bitter lives. Wisdom is desirable. Wisdom puts us ahead of others and guarantees peace of mind in varying circumstances. Wisdom leads to success. Wisdom makes one stand out and be admirable in how they conduct the business of life.

Proverbs 16:16
How much better to get wisdom than gold!
To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

The Bible tells us lot about wisdom and in Proverbs 16:16 it values it above material possession. The Bible recommends that we get wisdom above all else (Proverbs19:8). The Bible emphasises that wisdom is God given (Proverbs 2:6/James 1:5). The book of James in the following pericope suggests that there are two types of wisdom. Therefore not everyone who is wise is correctly wise. So for every wise person we must ask, which is your wisdom?

James 3:13
Wisdom from Above

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

James 3:14
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.

James 3:15
This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

James 3:16
For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

James 3:17
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

James 3:18
And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

There is wisdom from above and wisdom which is not from above. Which wisdom do you admire in others and even use it to motivate your self and others? When you listen to motivation clips, speeches and read books that contain inspiring wisdom, which wisdom is it? Wisdom from above or from elsewhere?

We are in the habit of forwarding motivational quotes from great leaders and other inspiring stuff. Some of the people who wrote or said whatever inspires us did not and do not believe in God and His word. Some of the wise things we adopt from others are from people who are completely opposed to God. The wisdom they give seems sensible and inspiring, but where does this wisdom come from? Which wisdom is this?

School children who are about to write final exams are given motivational speakers to inspire them. From the wise words of the motivators they face exams and life. They are motivated and wise. But which wisdom is this? Children succeed in school exams but adopt drug abuse habits and reject religion. Which wisdom guided their success in exams but couldn’t grant a better quality life. Which wisdom?

Non-believing teachers and scholars are placed before students. They are knowledgeable and wise in their disciplines. Students admire them and make them role models. In the course of their interaction with students, they share wisdom, but which wisdom? Is it constructive or destructive wisdom? Is it wisdom from above or from elsewhere? Which wisdom?

Counsellors who guide people facing various challenges base their wisdom and knowledge on premises which sometimes and many times is opposed to God’s revealed will. When we seek their counsel and wisdom, which wisdom is it? No wonder some drug addicts go to rehabilitation centres, they are counselled but they never recover. Which wisdom did they receive?

Not every wise person is safe to admire or copy their life. Not every wise book is safe for reading. Not every motivator is safe for our audiences. Not every clip and quote of wisdom is safe and right to forward around on social media. Wisdom comes in two types. Wisdom from God above and wisdom that is not from God! For every wisdom we wish to adopt or share, we must ask, which wisdom is this?

James 3:14 and 16 quoted above tells us that if the wisdom has bitterness, jealous and self centredness, it is not from God. Wisdom that is inspired, based on and driven by bitterness or jealous of others is not wisdom from God. Wisdom whose basis and end is to be better than others and gloat over others is not wisdom from heaven. Wisdom that is self-centred and doesn’t mind if it is built on the misfortune of others, is not God given wisdom. If our focus is not to understand what we learn and excel in what we do, but to beat others, be better than those considered opponents, that wisdom may work but it is not from God. Wisdom that creates enemies and a sense of competition in order to be driven by jealous. You build because others are building, not because you need a building. You buy property and more things, not because you need but because others have and you shouldn’t be left behind. The sense of competition creates enmity and it’s not divine. That is why competitive activities like sports, music events, etc. are not encouraged among christians.

Wisdom based on competition, creating enemies and harnessing your own inner power with no reference to God, is not divinely given wisdom. Wisdom that puts us at war with everybody in order to drive us to success, may work but is not God given. The wisdom in books such as “The 48 laws of power” and “The 33 strategies of war” and “The art of war” are wisdom gleaned from war situations and now geared towards business and life. The wisdom makes a lot of sense but is built on a premise opposed to tenets of christian faith, therefore the wisdom may seem good but is not of God and is subtly opposed to the things of God.

Political wisdom that constantly creates two sides the opposers and supporters is not wisdom that can be admired or adopted by believers of Jesus Christ. When church politics applies same methods of constantly taking sides to support or oppose, that wisdom is not only foreign to our faith, but is also opposed to it. To blindly choose to support or oppose in order to gain power and other favours, is wisdom and has worked for many and failed others, but it is not God given and is opposed to God.

James 3:15
This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

The Bible talks of such wisdom as unspiritual and demonic! It is wisdom, it is good but the origin if properly investigated is demonic and opposed to spirituality. Therefore preachers and church people should not quote or share such wisdom. Not all wisdom is from God. If the one giving wisdom is not a believer of God and the things of God, beware! If the wisdom leads to life that centres on human ability and says less or nothing of what God can do, beware. If the wisdom opposes any or all teachings of christian life, beware. Beware you could be handling unspiritual demonic stuff.

Wisdom that is not from God may deliver short term reprieve and sense of achievement but in the long run it fails. It creates enemies and makes life unbearable. A life of living in fear and looking over your shoulders is no good life. A life of paranoia that others are plotting to outdo you or destroy you, is no good life. Yet that is what wisdom that spurs success from competition brings. It creates competition and there will never be contentment and peace in the endless rush to remain best.

James 3:17
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

May God grant us the wisdom from heaven that has enduring, sustainable results, with peace of mind. May God save us from adopting any wisdom and accepting anything that sounds wise. May God give us wisdom to be able to see the basis on which the common wisdom is built.May God save us from fake wisdom of the world. May God’s wisdom though different from that of the world around us, guide our lives to daily and ultimate success in Jesus name, Amen!(c)rkesis@gmail.com (do not delete any part of this post, including this.
