Because Your Heart Was Responsive…

2 Kings 22:11
When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes.

2 Kings 22:19
because your heart was penitent (responsive), and you humbled yourself before the Lord, when you heard how I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and you have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the Lord.

King Manasseh was the father to king Amon who was the father to king Josiah. King Manasseh and King Amon were evil and did not listen to God’s will, but instead did evil and led the people they led astray. King Josiah was different, he loved the LORD and did the will of God and even led in the repair and restoration of God’s temple and its worship services. During the restoration and repair of the temple, the priests came across the word of God, the book of the law. Upon reading the book, the priests were alarmed by its contents and they immediately sent it to the king to read so that he can decide if the nation should follow it or ignore it. The texts quoted above report that when the king heard the word of God, words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes. Tearing of clothes was symbolic of repentance and confession of sins.

God spoke through Huldah the prophetess to appreciate the king’s response to the word of God, the book of the law. We therefore learn a very important lesson, that while we are listening to the word of God or we are reading, God watches out for a response from us. God expects us to respond to His word. Even while reading this article, God is watching for your reaction, your response to this word. God watches for a response to His word as it comes to you in church, through TV, radio, articles, books, internet, spoken to you directly, etc. God is watching and waiting for your response as He watched king Josiah and commended him for positive response. Because your heart was responsive….

God says to king Josiah that since you responded to my word, i have heard you. The answers to our prayers also depend on our response to the revealed word of God. We cannot ignore the revealed word of God and expect answered prayers. We cannot postpone responding to the word of God and expect answers to our prayers from the same God. God spoke to king Josiah through Huldah the prophetess and said that, “because your heart was responsive… I(God) have also heard you.” What is your response to the revealed word of God? That will determine whether your prayers will ever answered. King Josiah’s prayers were answered, because his heart was responsive to the word of God revealed to him. Because your heart was responsive….

The revealed word of God refers to what we have now understood from God’s word that we didn’t understand in the past. The revealed word of God is what others prefer to call the present truth. It is a truth that is relevant to our present situation. When the word speaks to our present situation and God’s will for a matter is clear at that moment. When Joseph wanted to quietly break his engagement to Mary because of her pregnancy, God brought a word that he should not do that. The message to Joseph was the revealed word of God, the present truth he was to heed. Answers to his prayers and direction of his life, depended on how he responded to the revealed word of God. When it is clear you shouldn’t continue with a relationship because the individual you love is of a different faith or abuses drugs, how do you respond to the revealed truth, the present truth? King Josiah lived a very good life and God answered his prayers, because his heart was responsive to God’s revealed truth. Because your heart was responsive….

The revealed word of God, the present truth, is what God expects of us today as we prepare for the end of the world. The revealed word of God, the present truth may be health reform, spiritual revival and reformation, etc. What is our response to the revealed word of God, the present truth? The revealed word of God may be repentance of some sins, keeping the sabbath as biblically taught, forgiving an enemy, etc. Your response to the revealed word of God is the password to answered prayers. Is your heart responsive as that of king Josiah? Because your heart was responsive….

Because your heart was responsive means that unlike others you accepted God’s word and it made sense to you. Is the word of God accepted to you? Does the word of God make sense to you? Is your heart responsive to the revealed word of God? God speaks to us on literally everything. God speaks to our relationships, our daily struggles, our pains, our joys, our sorrows, our hopes, our disappointments, etc. What God speaks many times may go against the grain, may require difficult decisions on our side. Unpopular decisions to forgive, unpopular decisions to quit a life of crime and drug abuse, unpopular decision to be baptised or re-baptised, unpopular decision to love your enemies, unpopular decision to return tithes and offerings faithfully to church, etc. Unpopular decisions are difficult to make, but that is what many times, God’s word when revealed, demands from us. If we make the difficult decisions as a response to God’s word, then that means our hearts are responsive. Because your heart was responsive….

King Josiah ruled differently and happily and peacefully unlike his father king Amon and his grandfather king Manasseh. The secret of a happy blessed and successful life of king Josiah was that his heart was responsive to God’s word. Because your heart was responsive….

Psalms 51:10
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.

May God create in us a responsive heart. May our lives turn out to be better, happy and successful as we respond to the daily revealed word of God. May it be said of us that, all went well because your heart was responsive to God’s word. This is our prayer in Jesus name, Amen!(c)rkesis@gmail.com (do not delete any part of this post, including this.
